Switzerland has the most punctual and scenic railways in the world, but single tickets are expensive. For most visitors, the Swiss Travel Pass is the simplest and often the cheapest way to travel. Here is how it works.
What is included
- Unlimited travel on trains, buses and boats across the Swiss network
- Public transport in more than 90 towns and cities
- Scenic trains such as the GoldenPass, Bernina Express and Glacier Express (seat reservation extra)
- Free entry to more than 500 museums
- Free mountain excursions to Rigi, Stanserhorn and Stoos
Discounts on mountain railways
Many famous mountain trips are not fully included but get a discount, usually 25 to 50 percent: the Jungfraujoch, Gornergrat, Pilatus and Titlis. Even with a discount, these excursions are among the most expensive parts of a Swiss trip, so plan them for clear days.
First or second class?
Second class is clean and comfortable. First class has more space, fewer people and often better views on panorama trains, and is worth it on long scenic journeys or in high season.
When is it worth it?
The pass usually pays off if you travel between several cities on most days, as on our Classic Switzerland and Glacier Express tours. If you stay in one place and only take short trips, a Half Fare Card or single tickets may be cheaper.
Practical tips
Download the SBB Mobile app for timetables and the digital pass. Reserve seats on the Glacier and Bernina Express well in advance in summer. Children under 16 travelling with a parent can travel free with the Swiss Family Card.
On our Swiss tours we choose and buy the right pass for you, including reservations on panorama trains.
