Neuschwanstein Castle: How to Visit Without Stress

romantic road neuschwanstein

Neuschwanstein is the most famous castle in Germany and one of the most visited sights in Europe. King Ludwig II built it from 1869 as a romantic retreat, and today about a million people come every year. With good planning, your visit can still be calm and memorable.

Book tickets in advance

You can only see the interior on a guided tour with a fixed entry time. Tickets are sold online and often sell out weeks ahead in summer. Book as early as possible and arrive in the village of Hohenschwangau at least 90 minutes before your entry time to collect tickets and walk up.

Getting up to the castle

From the ticket centre it is a 30 to 40 minute walk uphill on a paved road. You can also take a horse-drawn carriage for most of the way, or a shuttle bus to the Marienbrücke and then walk down about 15 minutes. Comfortable shoes are essential.

The best view

The classic view is from the Marienbrücke, a narrow iron bridge over the Pöllat gorge. In the early morning there are fewer people. If the bridge is closed for repairs or in winter, the viewpoints on the path above the Alpsee are a good alternative.

What else to see nearby

  • Hohenschwangau Castle, where Ludwig grew up, just below Neuschwanstein
  • The Alpsee lake, ideal for a short walk or a picnic
  • The Wieskirche, a rococo pilgrimage church 30 minutes away
  • The old town of Füssen at the start of the Romantic Road

When to go

Late spring and autumn offer the best light and fewer crowds. In winter the castle looks magical under snow, but some paths may be closed.

On our Romantic Road and Alpine tours, timed tickets are included and your guide takes care of the logistics.
