Itinerary Details

Day 1: Hanoi to Mai Chau – Valley of Smiles
Leave the city and head toward Mai Chau, a lush green valley nestled between mountain ranges. Stop for breaks along scenic roads and enjoy your first glimpse of northern rural life. Upon arrival, walk or cycle through local Thai villages and rice paddies. Check in to a peaceful stilt house or lodge and relax to the sound of nature.

Day 2: Mai Chau to Moc Chau – Land of Tea & Orchards
Continue your ascent into the highlands, reaching Moc Chau Plateau — famous for its endless tea hills, dairy farms, and blooming flower valleys. Visit local tea plantations, interact with Thai and Hmong communities, and admire the vast highland scenery. Settle into a hillside ecolodge with panoramic views and fresh mountain air.

Day 3: Moc Chau to Son La – Through the Mountains
Travel along winding mountain roads to Son La, a town known for its historic prison used by French colonial authorities. En route, stop at ethnic markets or roadside viewpoints. In Son La, visit the former prison and museum, offering insight into Vietnam’s struggle for independence. Stay overnight in a cozy hotel surrounded by hills and valleys.

Day 4: Son La to Dien Bien Phu – Road to History
A long but spectacular drive awaits as you head deeper into the northwest. Arrive in Dien Bien Phu, a name etched into Vietnamese and French history. Check in and take a sunset walk along the peaceful Muong Thanh Valley, imagining the scenes of 1954 when the Vietnamese forces secured a landmark victory here.

Day 5: Dien Bien Phu – A Walk Through Memory
Visit the war sites of Dien Bien Phu, including A1 Hill, the Command Bunker of General de Castries, and the Dien Bien Museum. With your local guide, retrace the steps of history and hear stories of resilience and sacrifice. In the afternoon, explore local villages of the Thai ethnic minority and enjoy the unique cultural mix of this border region.

Day 6: Flight or Drive Back to Hanoi
Depending on your schedule, return to Hanoi by domestic flight (recommended) or begin the full-day scenic drive back through the mountains. Tour ends with new perspectives — not only of Vietnam’s landscapes, but of its people’s courage and spirit.
